Sailing Makes For Mother and Child Reunion

Recently, PowerTime Chicago Member, Jessica Ward and her Mom, Trink Guarino, from Connecticuit, scheduled an ASA103 boating class together that included an overnight and two days of private boating lessons. Captain Jim Stewart of Racine was the Instructor for the Mother and Daughter team.

The class was held at Winthrop Harbor, near the Wisconsin border. Captain Stewart went over charts and navigational techniques with the ladies as they planned their course to Gaslight Harbor in Racine, WI. They sailed on Eagle Ray, a beautiful 36 foot, fully loaded Hunter powerboat. The trip took about 4 hours. The day was beautiful but the winds were light. They started out by motorboating untill they found some wind and then the sails were raised for a wonderful sail.

Jim explained to the Ladies how to use a handheld GPS along with the Raymarine chartplotter installed on the boat. They charted their course and all too soon, arrived at their intended destination. Trink belongs to a racing club and participates as crew adjusting sails but has had little time spent at the helm. With PowerTime, she was able to spend more time during the class handling the boat and keeping Eagle Ray on course.

Under the tutelage of their instructor, mother and daughter found their way to home port the next day with another great sail and plenty of time for learning new things and seeing the sights along the way.
